US vs. Englad Game at Legends

The World Cup has begun. For those that are not sports people, world cup is like the olympics in that is held every 4 years and the teams consists on national teams, but that is where the comparison stops as the World Cup is much better. I have some very fond memories going back the last few world cups, some of which include going to bars at 1am to catch live games that were being played in Korea/Japan.

This past week the opening featured Mexico playing South Africa (the host country). Unfortunately Mexico could only muster out a tie. Then came the big game with US playing England. We headed to midtown to catch the game after some BBQ. We arrived at Jack Dempsey’s 15 mins before game time and was told the place was full…that was a bummer and they mentioned that ESPN was going to be there shortly. If you watched the game, then it was the bar they showed with US fans right after the game ended. So who I believe was the owner told us he had another place “Legends” down the street. We headed to this pub and it was packed too. We mustered through the crowd and found a nice spot and grabbed a couple of cold ones. There were plenty of England fans as well. The excitement was in the air as patrons chanted U S A several times.

It did not take long for England to strike first blood and have to say the US did not play that well (except the goalie Howard). The US had some luck on their side as a goal was able to slip of the English goalie’s hand and everyone in the bar erupted. It was exciting to catch the game in the environment we did. The World Cup will continue for 4 more weeks…I look forward to catching some more games.
